Lace Up & Learn Up with Philadelphia Youth Basketball and TeamSnap Impact
On August 8, 2024, a high-energy envoy of TeamSnap volunteers joined TeamSnap Impact at the Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center in the Nicetown neighborhood of North Philadelphia for #TEAMSNAPWEEK. They coached, refereed and even scrimmaged with more than 100 youth basketball players from Philadelphia Youth Basketball (PYB).
While camp is a core part of the PYB program, this session was a bit different. For the first time, PYB welcomed players to the recently renovated, 100,000 square-foot multi-purpose center. CBS News calls the Sixth Man Center, “a ‘third place’ for the city’s youth where they can go for basketball but stay for workforce development, health and wellness programs and so much more.”
To that end, in addition to on-court assists of all kinds, TeamSnap employees held a special session on Careers in Sports.
The ultimate goal of the Sixth Man Center is to boost the important work that PYB is already doing in the community, and to increase the number of youth they serve from 700 to more than 1500 – or beyond. Ameen Akbar, PYB chief mission officer, told CBS, “We think we’re going to go four times that when we keep our neighborhood-based program and our hub here at the ‘Sixth Man’ Center.”
2024 year marks the third year of TeamSnap Impact support for PYB’s mission – to deliver life-changing opportunities and experiences to kids via the iconic game of basketball.
“The kids at Philly Youth Basketball asked engaging questions about our careers while competing hard on the court,” says Jay Bavishi, senior director of business development at TeamSnap. “Their brand-new facility is an amazing home for youth across the city to not just play basketball but learn important life skills. I’m proud of TeamSnap’s support of PYB.”
“It was a special day,” says Tomi Idowu, associate product marketing manager for TeamSnap for Brands. “I look forward to future opportunities to volunteer with great organizations providing a safe environment for young kids to give sports a shot.”
