Managing Expectations for Your Sports Organization in 2021

During a trying year, one moment seemingly everyone was excited for was flipping the calendar to 2021. Where 2020 had denied us so many of our simple pleasures, 2021 promised us a return to normalcy. But not long after we threw our 2020 calendars in the trash, the reality of 2021 settled in. The light at the end of the tunnel was brighter, but we still had a ways to go. As excitement grows for a full return to our favorite leagues and events, it’s important for administrators to effectively manage expectations. Here are a few ways you can make sure everyone stays on the same page.

Stay Informed

From vaccine registration to new COVID-19 variants, it’s important to stay informed on all of the latest news regarding COVID-19. It’s especially important to stay up to date on how that news is affecting local health guidelines. Make a routine of checking in with reliable news sources, including government websites, local newspapers and local news broadcasts. When you have access to the most accurate information, you increase trust and authority within your organization and among those who participate.

Consistent Communication

The easiest way to set and manage expectations for the coming season is through consistent communication. Local COVID guidelines as well as your organization’s health protocols can change on a week to week basis. Sending consistent email updates to coaches and parents keeps them informed on the latest news, but also allows you to detail the rationale behind any major decisions. Coaches and parents will always have questions, but a steady line of communication allows you to get out in front before the games begin.

Follow Through

Once expectations for your 2021 league or event are established, it’s essential to follow through. While the vast majority of coaches, parents, and athletes are likely to follow health protocols, including proper social distancing and mask wearing, some will try to skirt the rules. A polite reminder is often an effective motivator, but you also must be willing to hold participants and spectators to the high expectations you put forward, including withholding participation.

We’re all excited to get back to normal this year, especially when it comes to recreation and competition. But community leaders should welcome the responsibility of keeping everyone safe as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect our communities. You can set a positive example by staying in touch with those in your organization and setting high expectations for the coming 2021 seasons.
